Pineapples ship every week of the year out of all five origins below — Costa Rica far and away the largest, the Philippines the largest in Asia, then Ecuador, Ghana and Ivory Coast. Like bananas, this is a programme rather than a season, and volume firms through the Northern Hemisphere winter. The one variety explains most of the shape of that list: MD2 reorganised the trade in the 2000s, Costa Rica was already growing it at scale, and the West African origins that had supplied Europe on Smooth Cayenne lost the market and rebuilt on smaller, differentiated programmes.

Pineapples are chilling-sensitive in a way most reefer cargo is not: run them too cold and you get internal browning that does not show on the outside until the fruit is cut. The setpoint matters more than the calendar does.

Philippines

Year-round from the plantations in Bukidnon and South Cotabato, on the same standing-programme model as the bananas beside them. The Philippines is the largest pineapple exporter in Asia and one of the largest anywhere.

Ghana

Ships year-round Varieties: MD2, sugarloaf Load ports: Tema and Takoradi

Year-round, out of the Central and Eastern regions and shipping through Tema. Ghana’s recent history is the clearest example on this calendar of what a variety switch does to an origin: it built a European trade on Smooth Cayenne and lost most of it when the market moved to MD2 and Costa Rica was already growing it at scale.

Ivory Coast

Year-round, and a much smaller trade than it once was. Ivory Coast supplied most of Europe’s fresh pineapple before MD2 and Costa Rica took the market, and what remains is a differentiated programme — MD2 plus the small, aromatic Queen Victoria — rather than a volume one.
