Uchuva, cape gooseberry, physalis: the same small orange fruit in its papery husk, and Colombia is effectively the only origin exporting it at scale. Harvest runs most of the year with a firm peak into the Northern Hemisphere winter, when European demand for it is highest.

It is a high-value, low-volume export and it travels in its husk, which does a remarkable amount of the preservation work. Enough of it now goes by sea rather than air that the transit is worth watching — but the margin for error on temperature is narrow and the cargo is valuable enough that a lost container hurts.

Harvested most of the year with a firm peak into the Northern Hemisphere winter, when European demand for it is highest. Colombia is effectively the only origin exporting uchuva at scale.

The husk does a lot of the preservation work, which is what made the move from air to sea possible. It is still high-value, low-volume cargo on a narrow temperature margin — the kind of container where knowing the reefer held its setpoint is worth more than knowing the ETA.
