Strawberries run counter to the European summer on purpose. Huelva in Spain and the Nile delta in Egypt both ship through the Northern Hemisphere winter and early spring, into the months when nothing local is fruiting.
Very little of the fresh crop goes by sea. Strawberries have a shelf life measured in days, so fresh volume moves by truck and by air, and the sea trade is frozen fruit going to processors. That distinction matters when reading this calendar: the window is the harvest, not a container programme.
Egypt
December–March peak · April, November shoulder Load ports: Alexandria, Damietta, and Port Said
Roughly November to April out of the Nile delta, on the same counter-season logic as the Spanish and Moroccan crops.
Most Egyptian strawberry volume is frozen rather than fresh, and it travels as a processing commodity in ordinary reefers rather than as a fragile fresh programme. The fresh trade exists but is small and moves by air.
Spain
February–May peak · January, June shoulder Load ports: Valencia, Algeciras, and Barcelona
Roughly January to June out of Huelva, which supplies most of the European fresh strawberry market in the first half of the year.
This is a truck trade and nothing else — fresh strawberries have days of life, not weeks. It is on this calendar because it explains why nobody ships fresh strawberries by sea, and why the Egyptian and Moroccan crops behave the way they do.
