The Philippines is the banana origin the Latin American pages on this calendar do not describe. It is the largest exporter in Asia, almost all of it Cavendish grown in Mindanao — Davao del Norte, Bukidnon and Davao de Oro — and almost none of it sold into Europe. The buyers are in Japan, South Korea, China and Hong Kong, and the lane is days rather than weeks: Davao to Yokohama or to Hong Kong is a short hop next to the Atlantic crossings everything else here is planned around.

That length changes what a shipment is. Fruit arrives with most of its life still in front of it, so the commercial risk sits in the contract rather than in the voyage — Japanese volume in particular is bought on annual agreements, which means the price a season was budgeted at was fixed long before the box was loaded. Neither crop has a season. Bananas and pineapples ship against standing programmes every week of the year, and what actually moves is volume: the wet months thin it, a typhoon crossing Mindanao removes weeks of it, and Panama disease TR4 has taken plantations out of production for good rather than for a season.

Every week of the year, out of Mindanao and shipping through Davao and General Santos. This is the largest banana programme in Asia and it is a different trade from the Latin American one on the rest of this page: the buyers are in Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong, and the voyage is days rather than a fortnight.

Because the lane is short, almost nothing that decides the outcome happens at sea. Japanese volume in particular is committed on annual agreements, so the price was set long before the box was loaded and what an importer is actually managing is delivery against a schedule. The two things that break that schedule are a typhoon crossing Mindanao and a terminal, in that order.

Pineapple

Ships year-round Varieties: MD2

Year-round from the plantations in Bukidnon and South Cotabato, on the same standing-programme model as the bananas beside them. The Philippines is the largest pineapple exporter in Asia and one of the largest anywhere.

Most of that volume is not this trade. The bulk of the Philippine crop is canned, juiced or dried, and the fresh export programme is a smaller subset of it sold into Japan, Korea and China. Worth knowing when a headline production figure is quoted at you: it describes a cannery, not the fruit in a reefer.
