Ghana is a proximity trade. Tema is close enough to Northern Europe that fruit cut on a Monday is in a European distribution centre inside a fortnight, and that is the entire commercial argument for the origin — not price, not variety, but the number of days between the field and the shelf.

Pineapple is what Ghana is known for, and its recent history is a lesson in what a variety switch does to an origin. Ghana built a European trade on Smooth Cayenne and lost most of it when the market moved to MD2, which Costa Rica was already growing at scale; what exists now is a smaller, rebuilt programme on MD2 and on the sugarloaf varieties that Costa Rica does not supply. Bananas run alongside it on a smaller footprint. Neither crop has a season — both ship every week of the year — so the bands below show availability, and what actually varies is volume through the rains rather than a window opening and closing.

Year-round, out of the Central and Eastern regions and shipping through Tema. Ghana’s recent history is the clearest example on this calendar of what a variety switch does to an origin: it built a European trade on Smooth Cayenne and lost most of it when the market moved to MD2 and Costa Rica was already growing it at scale.

What exists now is smaller and deliberately different — MD2 alongside the sugarloaf varieties Costa Rica does not supply — and it competes on days rather than on price. Tema to Northern Europe is inside a fortnight, which is what lets a Ghanaian pineapple be sold on how recently it was cut.

Every week of the year, on a much smaller footprint than the pineapple programme beside it and almost all of it into Europe. Volume comes off a handful of large estates in the Volta region rather than off a broad grower base.

A concentrated origin is a predictable one until it isn’t. There is no second growing region to draw on here, so what would be a regional problem in Ecuador or Colombia is a national one in Ghana, and a buyer treating this as a swing supply should know how little slack sits behind it.
