Morocco is Europe’s counter-season greenhouse. Souss-Massa around Agadir grows tomatoes and soft fruit through the months when Spanish and Dutch production is at its lowest, and the whole trade is built on landing in Europe in the winter. Citrus runs on the same logic, and Moroccan easy-peelers — Nadorcott, Nour — are now a fixture of the European autumn.

Most of it never touches a deep-sea container. Volume goes by refrigerated truck through Tanger Med and across to Algeciras, then overland, which is faster than any sea routing and is why Moroccan produce reaches a Rotterdam buyer in days rather than weeks. What does ship in containers is the volume going further — the UK after Brexit changed the paperwork, Russia, and increasingly West Africa. Roughly October to May out of Souss-Massa around Agadir, grown for the months when Northern European production has stopped. It runs alongside Almería rather than after it: the two windows overlap almost exactly, and both thin out in January.

Mandarin

Roughly September to March. Moroccan easy-peelers are now a fixture of the European autumn, and Nadorcott in particular is the late variety that carries the season into the new year.

Orange

Roughly November to April, out of the Souss and Gharb regions. Maroc Late is the variety that carries the tail of the season and is the one most European buyers know by name.

Roughly December to March out of the Loukkos, around Larache and Moulay Bousselham, peaking in February. It opens ahead of the Moroccan blueberry window in the same region and closes as that one is getting going, which is how the same growers run both.

Blueberry

Roughly January to June out of the Loukkos and Gharb regions. Moroccan blueberry has scaled very fast and now fills the European spring — the gap between the end of the Peruvian and Chilean programmes and the start of the European harvest.
