The Dominican Republic is the organic banana origin. A disproportionate share of what European retail sells as organic comes from here, and the reason is climate rather than policy: the dry growing regions in Azua and the north-west make organic production practical in a way the wet Latin American lowlands do not. That is a different programme and a different price from the conventional volume on the Ecuador and Colombia pages — and it is a certified one, which means the paperwork travels with the fruit or the premium does not survive the arrival.

The avocado row is not the same fruit as everywhere else on this calendar. The Dominican crop is green-skin — Semil 34 and Carla — larger than a Hass, lower in oil, and sold mostly into the US East Coast rather than into European retail. Reading it as an alternative Hass source is reading the wrong row. Both crops sit on very short lanes: Caucedo is under a week from the US East Coast and around a fortnight from Northern Europe, which is what makes a fruit sold on freshness work from an island this size.
