Blueberries are the fruit that made sea freight out of Peru work. They used to fly; when controlled-atmosphere reefers made a three-week voyage survivable, the economics changed and the volume followed. Peru now dominates the Northern Hemisphere autumn, Chile carries the Southern Hemisphere summer behind it, Argentina opens the season ahead of both, and Morocco supplies Europe overland in the spring.

Blueberries are also unforgiving cargo. They arrive with very little shelf life in hand, so the difference between a 22-day and a 28-day transit is the difference between a sale and a claim. Watch the window, but watch the transit harder.

Peru

September–December peak · January–February, August shoulder Load ports: Callao, Paita, and Pisco

Roughly September to February, peaking hard from October to December. This is the programme that built the reefer lane out of Paita, and it is the single busiest thing Peru ships.

Chile

November–January peak · February, October shoulder Load ports: Valparaíso, San Antonio, and Coronel

Roughly November to February, picking up where Peru’s window tails off. For a European buyer the two origins together mean blueberries land almost every week from September through to the Northern Hemisphere’s own crop.

Argentina

September–November peak · August, December shoulder Load ports: San Antonio Este, Buenos Aires, and Zárate

Roughly September to November out of Entre Ríos and Tucumán. Argentina opens the Southern Hemisphere blueberry season ahead of both Peru and Chile, which is its whole commercial position.

Morocco

February–May peak · January, June shoulder Load ports: Agadir, Casablanca, and Tanger Med

Roughly January to June out of the Loukkos and Gharb regions. Moroccan blueberry has scaled very fast and now fills the European spring — the gap between the end of the Peruvian and Chilean programmes and the start of the European harvest.
