Brazil exports from two different countries, agriculturally speaking. The irrigated São Francisco valley in the north-east — Petrolina and Juazeiro — grows mangoes and table grapes on a schedule that has very little to do with the Southern Hemisphere calendar, because irrigation and pruning set the harvest rather than the season does. The temperate south grows apples on a conventional Southern Hemisphere window, months later and 2,000 km away.

For a European importer the north-eastern ports are the point. Pecém and Natal are the closest South American loading points to Europe, and the voyage is short enough to make programmes work on fruit that would not survive a Pacific-coast transit. It is the reason Brazilian melon lands in good condition and Peruvian melon does not travel. Volume through those ports peaks in the second half of the year.

Mango

Roughly August to December out of the São Francisco valley, shipping through Pecém and Natal, with fruit available for much of the rest of the year at lower volume. Irrigation and pruning set this harvest rather than the season does, which is why the window looks nothing like Peru’s despite the two countries sharing a hemisphere.

Melon

Roughly September to March out of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, aimed squarely at the European winter. Brazil is the melon origin for Europe in those months and there is not really a second one.

Two harvests a year, roughly April to June and October to December, because vines in the irrigated São Francisco valley are pruned to a schedule rather than a season. That is the one thing worth knowing about Brazilian grapes: they arrive in months no other Southern Hemisphere origin can supply.
