Ivory Coast is the larger of the two West African origins on this calendar and the one European supermarkets buy from directly. Bananas out of the Agnéby and Comoé valleys ship every week of the year into France, Spain and the Benelux, on a lane out of Abidjan that sits inside the Latin American ones — which is why a fruit ripened on arrival can be sold here on how recently it was cut.

Pineapple is the other half, and it is a smaller trade than it once was. Ivory Coast supplied most of Europe’s fresh pineapple before MD2 and Costa Rica took the market, and what remains is a differentiated programme rather than a volume one. Neither crop has a season. What stops a programme here is not the calendar and rarely the weather: it is Abidjan, which handles most of the region’s containers and has no near substitute, so a strike or a disruption ashore removes a week of shipping that no amount of planning at the farm recovers.

Every week of the year, out of the Agnéby and Comoé valleys and shipping through Abidjan into France, Spain and the Benelux. It is the larger of the two West African banana programmes and the one European retail buys from directly.

The lane is what the origin sells. Abidjan to Northern Europe sits inside the Latin American crossings, so the fruit arrives younger and can be ripened on a shorter schedule — which matters to a ripener with fixed room capacity far more than the difference in FOB price does.

Pineapple

Year-round, and a much smaller trade than it once was. Ivory Coast supplied most of Europe’s fresh pineapple before MD2 and Costa Rica took the market, and what remains is a differentiated programme — MD2 plus the small, aromatic Queen Victoria — rather than a volume one.
