Two origins on this page and two different fruits. Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit, sold as pitahaya, has two windows a year rather than one — a main harvest through the second half of the year and a thinner autumn window that shows below as a shoulder band rather than a second peak. Vietnamese dragon fruit is the white-flesh, red-skinned one, it comes from Binh Thuan in far larger volume, and it does not really stop.

Both are exports that moved from air to sea as growers learned what the fruit tolerates, and both are unforgiving of a setpoint that drifted. The difference is the market: Ecuador ships a high-value, low-volume programme to Europe, while Vietnam ships a commodity crop a few days up the coast into Hong Kong and mainland China, where the price is set by the week rather than by the season.

Two windows a year rather than one: the main harvest from roughly July to November, and a thinner one from February to April. The second is real volume rather than the tail of the first, but it is small enough to sit in the shoulder band above — a buyer working from a single-season assumption will still miss it.

Dragon fruit has moved from air to sea as growers learned what it tolerates. It is high-value, low-volume cargo with a narrow temperature margin, which makes a lost container a serious loss rather than an annoyance.

Vietnam

October–April peak · May–September shoulder Varieties: White-flesh, red-skinned Load ports: Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong

The natural harvest in Binh Thuan runs May to September and is the cheapest fruit of the year. The band drawn as peak is the other one: growers light the orchards at night from about October to flower the crop out of season, and that is the fruit the export programme into Hong Kong and mainland China is built on, running into the Lunar New Year weeks.

So the calendar reads backwards from most on this page. Availability is close to constant and the question is price, which turns on which crop is on the vessel rather than on whether there is one.
