Tomatoes are Europe’s largest counter-season vegetable trade, and the calendar is really a negotiation between two origins. Morocco’s Souss-Massa and Almería in Spain run almost the same window, roughly October to May; between them the European shelf is full all winter and the price is set by how much of each is arriving.

They also thin out together. Light and cold slow both origins in January, after a heavy December on each side, which is why a January shortage moves the price further than a shortage in any other month — there is no third origin to cover it.

Almost none of it is a container programme. Volume moves by refrigerated truck — Morocco through Tanger Med and across to Algeciras, Spain overland — which is faster than any sea routing. Read this window for what it does to the market rather than for shipping planning.

Morocco

Roughly October to May out of Souss-Massa around Agadir, grown for the months when Northern European production has stopped. It runs alongside Almería rather than after it: the two windows overlap almost exactly, and both thin out in January.

Spain

Roughly October to May out of the greenhouses of Almería, opening as supply turns consistent at the end of October and winding down through May as prices fall. This is the largest vegetable programme in the Spanish export trade and it overlaps Morocco’s almost exactly — the two are not dividing the winter between them so much as competing across it.
