Mangoes come out of the Americas in a relay: Ecuador and Peru take the Southern Hemisphere summer, Mexico and Guatemala take the Northern Hemisphere spring, Brazil runs a long irrigated window through the second half of the year, and Egypt supplies the Mediterranean in late summer. Australia and India sit outside that relay entirely — Australia shipping its spring crop into Asia rather than into the Atlantic markets, India its April and May crop into the Gulf and the UK. The handovers are the interesting part of the calendar, because that is where an importer can hold a programme together across origins.

Mangoes are shipped hard and ripened at destination, which makes the transit itself less fragile than a berry programme — but it also means a delay is not recoverable by ripening faster. Fruit that arrives late arrives late. The one thing to check before reading a window as a shipping plan is the routing: most of the Indian crop flies, because the varieties that market pays for are worth more in the air than at sea.

Peru

Roughly December to March out of Piura, shipping through Paita. Kent is the variety European buyers will see almost exclusively.

Mexico

March–July peak · February, August shoulder Varieties: Ataulfo, Kent, Tommy Atkins Load ports: Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, and Veracruz

Roughly March to July, moving north through the growing regions as the season progresses: Chiapas and Oaxaca first, Sinaloa last. Ataulfo is the variety Mexico is known for, and Tommy Atkins and Kent carry most of the export volume.

Ecuador

Roughly October to January, the earliest of the three American mango windows on this site. It hands over to Peru in December and to Mexico in the spring.

Brazil

August–December peak · January–February, June–July shoulder Varieties: Kent, Palmer, Tommy Atkins Load ports: Pecém, Natal, Salvador, and Santos

Roughly August to December out of the São Francisco valley, shipping through Pecém and Natal, with fruit available for much of the rest of the year at lower volume. Irrigation and pruning set this harvest rather than the season does, which is why the window looks nothing like Peru’s despite the two countries sharing a hemisphere.

Guatemala

Roughly March to June, running just ahead of and alongside the Mexican window. Guatemala is the smaller of the two and is often the origin that opens the Northern Hemisphere season.

Roughly September to January, starting in the Northern Territory around Darwin and moving south through Queensland as the season runs. It is the Southern Hemisphere spring window, and it hands over to the South American origins rather than competing with them.

April and May for Alphonso, with Kesar behind it into June. It is the export India is famous for and the one that barely uses a container: the fruit is picked mature, ripens fast and is worth enough per kilo to fly.
