The route

North up the Pacific coast, through the Panama Canal, then up the US East Coast to the Delaware River. Philadelphia sits about a day past the Virginia and Carolina ports, and the fruit goes there anyway — the terminals, the cold stores and the inspectors are all in one place, which is worth more than the day.

The canal is the lane’s single structural dependency, the same one the European routings carry. In dry years the authority cuts daily transits and applies draught limits, so vessels queue or sail lighter. On a twelve-day lane a queue costs proportionally more than it does on a month-long one: three days out of twenty-eight is a nuisance, three days out of twelve is a quarter of the voyage.

The reefer is doing regulatory work, not just cooling

This is what separates a US lane from a European one, and it is the part importers new to it get wrong.

Several Peruvian commodities enter the United States under a phytosanitary treatment rather than on inspection alone, and for fruit fly hosts that treatment is usually cold: the cargo has to be held at a specified pulp temperature for a specified number of consecutive days, verified by calibrated probes placed in the fruit before the doors close. Where that treatment runs in transit, the voyage is the treatment.

Two consequences follow, and neither has a European equivalent.

A treatment can fail while the fruit is perfect. If a probe drifts outside the band for long enough, the run is broken — the cargo arrives sound and is still not admissible, and the options at that point are re-treatment in a cold store or refusal. Nothing about the fruit went wrong; the record did.

And the probes are placed once. They go into the pulp at stuffing, and no one touches them again until the container is opened by an inspector on the Delaware River. Seasonality

Blueberries run roughly September to February and are the volume programme on this lane. Table grapes overlap from around December to March, mangoes run in almost the same weeks out of Paita, and avocados sit on the far side of the year, roughly April to August. Asparagus is the odd one, and this lane is why. It ships close to year-round with a peak from September to December, and the American trade has already settled the argument the European one is still having: about 86% of Peru’s asparagus into the US goes by sea, against roughly seven in ten of the European volume that still flies. A transit short enough to spend on the distance is the whole reason, and this is one of the few routings where that arithmetic works.

What goes wrong on this lane

A broken treatment run. The failure that has no European counterpart, and the expensive one: admissible cargo turned back on a temperature record rather than on its condition.

Equipment at origin in December. The shipment never sails. There is nothing to track because nothing exists yet, and the first signal is usually the exporter saying they cannot get boxes.

The clock after discharge. Free time at a US terminal runs alongside a chassis and a trucker that both have to be arranged, and the container is not moving until the customs entry and the agency filings clear.
