Sea freight from Ecuador to the US East Coast typically takes 6–12 days port to port, sailing from Guayaquil or Posorja through the Panama Canal. Florida sits at the short end and the Delaware River at the long one, and the choice between them is usually made by where the ripening rooms are rather than by the sailing time.

By the standards of the Latin American produce trades this is a very short lane — a week, against a month into Northern Europe — and it is short in a way that changes what can go wrong on it.

The route

Out of the Gulf of Guayaquil, north to the Panama Canal, then into the Caribbean and up. A vessel serving Port Everglades is a handful of days out of Ecuador; one carrying on to Wilmington or Philadelphia adds most of a week. The canal is the only structural dependency and it is a mild one here — a queue that costs a month-long lane a fraction of its transit costs this one a fifth of it, but the alternative routings that hurt Chile and Peru simply do not arise at this distance.

Part of the trade does not move in containers at all. Dedicated reefer vessels serve the banana terminals directly, on a different schedule with different berths and a different discharge operation. If your fruit moves that way, container-level tracking references will not describe it.

Not a season — a programme

Bananas have no harvest window. They are cut and shipped every week of the year against contracts agreed well in advance, and the lane out of Guayaquil never closes. Volume and price firm through the Northern Hemisphere winter and soften in summer, but no month is quiet. A continuous programme fails differently from a season. A slipped week does not cost you a peak you cannot repeat — it costs you a collision, because the fruit behind it is already on the water and the ripening rooms both arrivals were going to use were allocated on the assumption that both would be on time.

The risk is ashore, not at sea

On a twenty-eight day lane the voyage is where the shelf life goes. On an eight-day one it is not, and importers who move onto this lane from a longer one keep watching the wrong half of the journey.

Bananas ship deliberately green and are brought to eating condition in ripening rooms on a schedule fixed weeks earlier. Pineapples add their own trap. MD2 is chilling-sensitive in a way most reefer cargo is not: run the container too cold and internal browning develops that is invisible until the fruit is cut. On a short lane the temptation to buy a margin of safety by dropping the setpoint is exactly the wrong instinct.

Fruit fly host commodities — mangoes in particular — enter the United States under a treatment applied at origin rather than in transit, which is a different arrangement from the cold treatment that runs on the Peruvian and Chilean lanes.

What goes wrong on this lane

Two arrivals colliding. The characteristic failure of a weekly programme. One slipped vessel does not delay one consignment, it puts two into the same ripening bay.

A setpoint or ventilation spec that was wrong before loading. Decided at origin, discovered at destination, and unfixable in between.

The truck leg. Discharge is the middle of this journey, not the end. Where the ripening rooms are inland, the road move and the free time clock are a larger share of the total elapsed time than the ocean was.

An ETA that is precise but not accurate. Short lanes make schedules look reliable. A two-day slip on eight days is a bigger proportion than a five-day slip on a month, and it arrives with almost no notice.

The useful signal on a long lane is the forecast; on this one it is the event. There is not enough voyage left to re-plan around a revised ETA — what you can still act on is the actual arrival and the actual discharge, because those are what let you move a ripening slot before two loads are competing for it.
