There is no banana season. All nine origins below harvest and ship every week of the year against standing programmes, and the calendar shows nine year-round bands because that is the honest answer to the question. What the grid cannot show is that they are not one trade. Ecuador, Colombia and Central America cross the Atlantic and the Caribbean into Europe and North America; Ghana and Ivory Coast supply Europe on a much shorter lane out of West Africa; the Philippines supplies Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong on a lane of days; and the Dominican Republic is the organic programme, which is a different price and a different set of documents rather than a different fruit.

What varies inside each of those is volume and price rather than availability: demand firms through the Northern Hemisphere winter and softens through its summer. And because bananas ship continuously rather than in a peak, the risk that matters is arrival collision — two consecutive shipments landing in the same week — rather than missing a window. So choosing an origin here is a question about lane length, market and certification, not about the calendar. The fruit is the same and it is always there.

Ecuador

Colombia

Every week of the year, out of Urabá and the Magdalena region through Turbo, Santa Marta and Cartagena. Colombia has shipped bananas on standing programmes for a century and the lane never closes.

Costa Rica

Guatemala

Year-round, from both coasts. Guatemala is one of the largest banana exporters in the world and the volume splits between Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific and Santo Tomás and Puerto Barrios on the Caribbean.

Philippines

Every week of the year, out of Mindanao and shipping through Davao and General Santos. This is the largest banana programme in Asia and it is a different trade from the Latin American one on the rest of this page: the buyers are in Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong, and the voyage is days rather than a fortnight.

Dominican Republic

Every week of the year, and a large share of it certified organic — which is what the origin is for. The dry growing regions in Azua and the north-west make organic production practical in a way the wet Latin American lowlands do not, so a disproportionate amount of what European retail sells as organic banana comes off this island.
