Watermelon is a summer crop sold into a summer market, which makes its calendar unusually simple: Morocco opens the European season in late spring, Spain takes it through the summer, and by autumn nobody is buying. There is no counter-season trade worth the freight.

Almost none of it travels far. Watermelon is heavy, cheap per kilo and does not repay a long voyage, so the trade is overwhelmingly overland within Europe and North Africa. The window matters here for what it does to price rather than for shipping planning.

Morocco

May–July peak · April, August shoulder Varieties: Seedless Load ports: Agadir, Casablanca, and Tanger Med

Roughly April to August, opening the European watermelon season ahead of the Spanish crop.

Watermelon is heavy, cheap per kilo and does not repay a long voyage, so this is overland trade to Europe and nothing else. The window matters for what it does to price when the Spanish crop arrives, not for shipping planning.

Spain

June–August peak · May, September shoulder Varieties: Seedless Load ports: Valencia, Algeciras, and Barcelona

Roughly May to September out of Almería and Murcia, taking over from Morocco as the European summer gets going.

Watermelon is heavy and cheap and does not travel far commercially, so this is overland trade within Europe. What it does to an importer is set the price for anything arriving in those months from anywhere else.
