Vietnam is the origin where the season is partly a decision. Growers in Binh Thuan light dragon fruit at night to flower it outside its natural window, and longan is pushed the same way with a flowering treatment, so windows that look like harvests on paper are broader in practice. Read the bands below as when the fruit is cheap and plentiful rather than as when it exists.

Durian is the exception and the growth story. It is genuinely seasonal, it is staggered by region — the Mekong Delta first, the Central Highlands around Dak Lak later — and that stagger is what puts Vietnam’s peak after Thailand’s. A buyer in Hong Kong working both origins covers most of the year; working one covers half of it. The voyage itself is three to seven days, which means the paperwork and the terminals decide the outcome far more often than the vessel does.

Dragon fruit

October–April peak · May–September shoulder Varieties: White-flesh, red-skinned

The natural harvest in Binh Thuan runs May to September and is the cheapest fruit of the year. The band drawn as peak is the other one: growers light the orchards at night from about October to flower the crop out of season, and that is the fruit the export programme into Hong Kong and mainland China is built on, running into the Lunar New Year weeks.

Durian

May–October peak · April, November shoulder Varieties: Ri6, Monthong

Roughly April to November, in volume from May, and staggered by region. The Mekong Delta orchards around Tien Giang and Ben Tre and the Southeast around Dong Nai open it. Dak Lak in the Central Highlands runs from about August and is now where the volume is.

Longan

July–September peak · June, October shoulder

Roughly June to October, out of Hung Yen in the north and the Mekong Delta in the south. It sits directly on top of Thailand’s main crop, which is why longan is the softest-priced thing on either lane in July and August.

Jackfruit

Ships year-round Varieties: Thai super-early

Year-round. The Thai super-early varieties planted through the Mekong Delta for export fruit continuously, so there is no window to plan around and no month when the crop is unavailable.
