Persimmon is the most recent addition to the European autumn, and in Europe it is almost entirely Spanish. The Ribera del Xúquer in Valencia turned Rojo Brillante into a commercial crop over about fifteen years, and the window now runs from October into the new year. Japan ships in the same weeks, but a small crop at a high price into Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore — the two origins overlap on the calendar and nowhere else.

For an importer the useful thing is what persimmon does to the shelf around it. It arrives when Southern Hemisphere stone fruit has finished and Northern Hemisphere citrus has barely started, so it competes for space with almost nothing — which is exactly why it grew.

Spain

Roughly September to January out of the Ribera del Xúquer in Valencia, which turned Rojo Brillante from a curiosity into a European autumn staple in about fifteen years.

Persimmon lands when Southern Hemisphere stone fruit has finished and Northern Hemisphere citrus has barely started, so it competes for shelf space with almost nothing. That gap is exactly why it grew, and it is worth knowing about before pricing anything else into November.

Japan

October–November peak · December shoulder Load ports: Yokohama, Kobe, and Nagoya

Roughly October and November, running into December. Japanese persimmon is a small export against a large domestic crop, and it goes to Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore rather than to Europe.

It ships in the same weeks Spain’s does, which is the only place on this calendar the two origins meet — and they do not meet as competitors. Different fruit, different markets, different prices, and neither is a fallback for the other.
