Longan is the crop on this calendar least defined by its own harvest. Both origins pick through the middle of the year, but northern Thai growers flower a second crop out of season with a potassium chlorate treatment, and that induced fruit is what supplies the weeks around Chinese New Year. Reading the natural window alone is reading about half the trade.

For a buyer the consequence is that availability and price come apart. The off-season fruit exists in the months when demand is highest and costs accordingly; the main crop lands in the weeks when Thailand and Vietnam are both shipping and prices are at their softest.

Thailand

July–August peak · June, September, November–February shoulder Load ports: Laem Chabang and Bangkok

The natural crop out of the north — Chiang Mai and Lamphun — runs July and August, opening in June. The second band, from November into February, is the off-season crop: growers flower it deliberately with a potassium chlorate treatment, and it is what supplies the weeks around Chinese New Year.

The two crops behave like different products commercially. Main-crop longan is plentiful and soft on price in the weeks Vietnam is also shipping; off-season fruit exists because demand is high enough to pay for it, and it is priced accordingly.

Vietnam

July–September peak · June, October shoulder Load ports: Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong

Roughly June to October, out of Hung Yen in the north and the Mekong Delta in the south. It sits directly on top of Thailand’s main crop, which is why longan is the softest-priced thing on either lane in July and August.

It is a fruit that browns rather than rots: the shell darkens within days of harvest and the flesh can still be perfect underneath. Buyers price on appearance, so the days lost at a terminal cost more here than the condition of the cargo suggests.
