Pears run alongside the Southern Hemisphere apple programmes and often in the same booking, from roughly January into the middle of the year. Argentina’s Río Negro valley is the volume origin; Chile and South Africa run overlapping windows; Washington and Oregon carry the Northern Hemisphere autumn. Packham’s Triumph, Beurré Bosc and Anjou are the varieties most European buyers will see.

China and Japan are on this calendar but they are not in that trade. A Ya pear and a nashi are round, crisp and eaten as a different thing from a Packham’s, and they are sold to different markets — so read those two rows as a separate programme that shares a word rather than as an alternative source. For everything else, pears are less forgiving than apples about temperature drift and they ripen at destination on a schedule the importer controls. The useful thing to know about a pear container is not only when it lands but what its reefer actually did on the way.

Chile
