When Thailand and Vietnam ship durian by sea, month by month, and why the two origins peak in different halves of the year.

Durian is the crop the Southeast Asian reefer trade is organised around. Thailand runs first — the eastern orchards from about April, the southern ones behind them — and Vietnam carries the back half of the year, its Central Highlands crop running well past the end of the Thai season. That is the single most useful fact on this page: a Hong Kong buyer working both origins has fruit for most of the year, and one working only Thailand does not.
It is also the least forgiving cargo on this calendar. Durian respires hard, produces ethylene and advances fast, so the fruit is picked at a maturity chosen for the voyage and a delay measured in days changes the product rather than the schedule. The lanes it moves on are short for exactly that reason.
Thailand
April–July peak · March, August shoulder Varieties: Monthong, Chanee, Kan Yao Load ports: Laem Chabang and Bangkok
Roughly March to August, in volume from April. The eastern orchards — Chanthaburi, Rayong and Trat — open the season and the southern provinces carry the back half of it, so the country ships for considerably longer than any one growing region does.
Peak durian is an event rather than a busy stretch. Volume concentrates hard, prices move within the week, and a container that arrives late arrives into a different market than the one it was sold into. On a lane of four to eight days that risk is real, and the days go at the terminals rather than at sea.

Vietnam
May–October peak · April, November shoulder Varieties: Ri6, Monthong Load ports: Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong
Roughly April to November, in volume from May, and staggered by region: the Mekong Delta orchards around Tien Giang and Ben Tre open it, and Dak Lak in the Central Highlands runs from about August and is now where the volume is.
That stagger is the whole reason a Hong Kong buyer works this lane and the Thai one. Vietnam peaks after Thailand has finished, so between them the two origins cover most of the year — and in the months where they overlap, the market has a choice it does not have in either shoulder.
