Italy is on this list for the same reason Spain is — it is what a European buyer measures an import against — but it changes a different half of the picture. Italy is Europe’s kiwifruit origin, which means the New Zealand and Chilean windows are not the kiwi calendar so much as the part of it that arrives once Italy has sold out. Apples out of South Tyrol and Trentino run from an autumn harvest through most of the following year. Table grapes out of Puglia and Sicily carry the European late summer. Sicilian blood oranges are a variety nobody else supplies in volume.

Very little of it sails.
