Peak — shipping in volume Shoulder — opening or closing Export windows out of the origin, not arrival weeks. Add the lane's transit.

Last reviewed August 2026. Windows are editorial ranges for a normal year, not a published schedule, and they are export weeks out of India rather than arrival weeks in your market.

India is the origin European buyers meet in the weeks when the Southern Hemisphere is finishing. Nashik in Maharashtra ships table grapes from about January to April, into Rotterdam in roughly three weeks, which is short enough to make a Northern Hemisphere programme out of a Southern Hemisphere gap. Pomegranate follows the same route, twice a year. Mangoes are what the country is famous for and the one line that barely travels by sea: Alphonso and Kesar fly, and the sea programme is a small, technically difficult subset of it.

What shapes the calendar is a monsoon rather than a winter, which is why so much of it is compressed into the first half of the year. What shapes the risk is everything that happens after loading. Indian produce into the EU is inspected and residue-tested more closely than most origins, and a held container on a three-week lane has already spent the margin the voyage banked. Onions add a second kind of exposure that is not on any other row here: the export itself can be restricted at short notice when the domestic price moves.

Table grapes

February–March peak · January, April shoulder Varieties: Thompson Seedless

Roughly February and March out of Nashik, opening in January and finishing in April. Rotterdam is about three weeks away through Nhava Sheva, which is what makes the window work at all.

India now has a large say in what a European grape costs in these weeks, because it lands as Peru finishes and while Chile and South Africa are still at sea. The catch is at the other end: Indian grapes into the EU are residue-tested closely, and a container held on arrival has spent exactly the margin the short lane was chosen for.

Mango

April–May peak · March, June shoulder Varieties: Alphonso, Kesar

April and May for Alphonso, with Kesar behind it into June. It is the export India is famous for and the one that barely uses a container: the fruit is picked mature, ripens fast and is worth enough per kilo to fly.

What does go by sea goes on controlled-atmosphere equipment, to the Gulf and to the UK, with a buyer who has done the arithmetic on ripening at destination. Read the window below as the crop calendar and check the routing separately.

Pomegranate

September–December peak · February–May shoulder Varieties: Bhagwa

India ships on two crops. The mrig bahar harvest carries the main export window from about September to December; the ambe bahar crop fills a second, thinner window in the Northern Hemisphere spring.

Between them they cover the months Turkey and Egypt do not, which is what makes India the origin a year-round pomegranate programme needs. The fruit stores for months, so as on every other pomegranate row here, the risk sits at the far end rather than at sea.

Onion

April–September peak · October–March shoulder

Effectively year-round on three harvests. The rabi crop lifted from March cures and carries exports through the middle of the year; the kharif crop from October covers the rest, which is why the shoulder band below is every remaining month.

The exposure on this row is not agricultural. India has repeatedly restricted, taxed or banned onion exports at short notice when the domestic price rises, and a programme can stop being legal between the booking and the loading. No other window in this section carries that risk, and it belongs in a contract clause rather than in a plan.
