Melons are grown for a date rather than for a season. Almost the entire export trade exists to land fruit in the Northern Hemisphere winter, when local production has stopped — Brazil and Central America from about December to April, Spain through the European summer when nobody needs to import at all.

They are also among the most fragile things that travel in a reefer at scale. Cantaloupe and Galia bruise, respire fast and arrive with days rather than weeks of life. The origins that succeed at it are the ones close enough to the market for the voyage to be short — which is why Brazil’s north-eastern ports carry melon and its southern ones do not.

Brazil

Roughly September to March out of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, aimed squarely at the European winter. Brazil is the melon origin for Europe in those months and there is not really a second one.

Roughly December to April, out of Guanacaste, grown for the North American and European winter. This is the one genuinely seasonal thing on the Costa Rican calendar.
