Table grapes are a long programme rather than a short burst, and between twelve origins the calendar does not close at all. Peru opens the Southern Hemisphere season in about November; Chile and South Africa run through its summer; India and Australia take February and March, one selling into Europe and the other into Asia; Brazil ships twice a year on an irrigated schedule that ignores the season altogether; and Egypt, Turkey, Italy, California and Mexico fill the Northern Hemisphere summer and autumn as the Southern Hemisphere finishes.

One row on that list is not the same trade as the others. Japan’s Shine Muscat is sold by the bunch as a gift rather than by the carton as fruit, and it is worth many times what anything else here is worth. Everything else is a volume programme where grapes travel better than berries and worse than pome fruit — and where the damage happens at the end rather than in the middle. A container sitting at a congested terminal after discharge costs more than a slow voyage did.

Peru

Roughly December to March, opening in November. Peru’s grape window sits just ahead of Chile’s and overlaps with it, which is why a European buyer sees both origins on offer in January.

Chile

Roughly December to April, the longest single programme Chile runs. It overlaps Peru’s window at the start and carries well past the end of the cherry season.

Mexico

Roughly May to July out of Sonora, a short Northern Hemisphere window that lands between the end of the Chilean programme and the start of the Californian one.

Two harvests a year, roughly April to June and October to December, because vines in the irrigated São Francisco valley are pruned to a schedule rather than a season. That is the one thing worth knowing about Brazilian grapes: they arrive in months no other Southern Hemisphere origin can supply.

Roughly January to May out of Sunraysia and the Murray Valley, shipping through Melbourne. The window sits behind Chile’s and ahead of the Northern Hemisphere’s own crop, which makes it the late-season supply into Asia rather than a competitor for the December weeks.
