Captain Peter, Maersk's reefer service

Also known as Maersk Captain Peter and Maersk Remote Container Management.

Maersk's reefer monitoring service: temperature, atmosphere and position pushed to you in transit, on the Maersk boxes that carry the hardware.

Published

Captain Peter is Maersk’s reefer monitoring service. It pushes what the refrigeration unit is reporting — temperature, atmosphere on a controlled atmosphere booking, power state, position — to the customer during the voyage, rather than leaving the data on the box until arrival.

The name is a piece of branding on top of an older platform: Maersk fitted its reefer fleet with telematics under the name Remote Container Management, and Captain Peter is the customer-facing service built on it.

What an importer gets from it

Milestone updates, condition data at the interval the service samples, and alerts when the unit goes out of range or loses power. On some equipment it also supports two-way control — a setpoint or ventilation change requested through Maersk and sent down to the box.

Two conditions decide whether any of it reaches you. The container has to carry the hardware, which depends on the age of the box you were allocated rather than on anything you booked. And the booking has to be yours: routed through a forwarder, the data lands in their account.

What it does not cover

It covers Maersk. An importer buying from several origins is usually on several lines, and each has its own product — Hapag-Lloyd has Live Reefer, for instance. So the condition data arrives in as many places as you have carriers, in as many formats.

That is the practical reason importers on carrier-owned reefers end up pairing carrier monitoring with a tracking platform. The line tells you how its own boxes are doing; the tracking layer puts every shipment, on every carrier, on one timeline with the ETA movement and the discharge event that starts free time. Trackberry does the second, across the lines you actually ship with.

FAQ

Do I get Captain Peter data on every Maersk reefer?

No. It depends on whether the specific container you were allocated carries the reporting hardware, which is not something you can request at booking. Ask about the box on the shipment rather than about the fleet.

Does it replace the temperature log?

No. It is a stream of readings during the voyage, useful for noticing a problem while you can still act on it. The full log downloaded on arrival is the record a quality claim is argued over, and it should still be pulled every time.

I booked through a forwarder and see nothing. Why?

Because the data follows the account that holds the booking. If the forwarder is the contracting party with the line, the portal is theirs — ask them to forward it, or to add you.
