1-MCP blocks the receptors fruit uses to sense ethylene, which pauses ripening. It is applied before the container moves and it cannot be undone later.

1-MCP is a gas applied to fruit after harvest that occupies the receptors the fruit uses to sense ethylene, its own ripening signal. The fruit keeps producing ethylene and stops being able to hear it, so ripening pauses.
It is sold under trade names — SmartFresh is the one most importers see on a specification — and it is applied in a sealed room at the packhouse or in the container, hours after harvest rather than days. Nothing about it is a shipping decision you can take later.
Where it sits next to CA and temperature
Controlled atmosphere slows the fruit’s whole metabolism by cutting oxygen. 1-MCP does something narrower: it interrupts one signal. That makes it powerful on fruit whose decline is driven by ethylene — apples, pears, avocados, some stone fruit — and close to useless on produce that simply respires itself to death.
It also does nothing about temperature. A treated pallet at the wrong setpoint is still a pallet at the wrong setpoint.
Why it matters on a long lane
1-MCP is one of the technologies quietly moving cargo from air to sea, because the days it buys are days at the start of the voyage rather than the end. On a lane where transit consumes most of the fruit’s quality life, that is the difference between arriving inside specification and arriving past it.
The risk runs the same direction. Over-treated fruit does not ripen properly at destination — pears that never soften, avocados that stay hard through a full ripening cycle — and there is no reversing agent. Treatment is a decision about what the fruit will do at destination, taken weeks earlier by somebody else.
Some markets also restrict its use, and organic programmes generally exclude it. Confirm both before agreeing a specification.

What does 1-MCP do to fruit?
It blocks the fruit’s ethylene receptors, so the ripening signal stops being received. Firmness, colour and flavour hold for longer, which is why it is used on fruit that has to travel a long way or be stored for months.
Can 1-MCP be reversed at destination?
No. The effect wears off as the fruit produces new receptors, on its own schedule and not on yours. Fruit treated too heavily for the lane it actually travelled arrives unable to ripen on the timetable the ripening rooms were booked around.
