Two-way reefer control: a setpoint at sea
Also known as Remote setpoint change and Two-way control.
Changing a reefer's setpoint, ventilation or humidity mid-voyage through the carrier. It is a request to the line, not a dial you get to turn.

Two-way reefer control is the ability to change a container’s settings while it is in transit — setpoint, ventilation rate, humidity, sometimes the atmosphere recipe — instead of only reading what the unit reports. The one-way version tells you what happened; the two-way version lets something be done about it.
In practice it is a request, not a control panel. You ask the line, the line’s cold chain team assesses it, and the instruction goes down to the box over the same telematics link that carries the readings back up. Nobody hands an importer a dial that reaches a container at sea. The reasons are good ones: the wrong number applied to the wrong box damages cargo, and the line carries the liability for the equipment.
When it is genuinely useful
Three situations come up often enough to be worth knowing about.
A routing change that lengthens the voyage — a missed connection, a diversion — can make a setpoint chosen for a 24-day transit wrong for a 31-day one.
A ventilation rate set for the wrong load matters on respiring cargo: fresh air exchange that is too low lets carbon dioxide build up, too high wastes the cooling.
And a unit running against a problem it can be helped out of, such as a defrost cycle behaving badly in high humidity.
Why it is not a rescue
The setpoint is a commercial decision made before the doors close, and two-way control does not undo a bad one. Fruit that was loaded warm is already above specification, and cooling it harder mid-voyage does not give the days back — the plant is sized to hold a temperature, not to pull a load down.
Treat it as a way to protect a correct decision when the voyage changes underneath it, not as a way to correct the decision itself. And note what has to be true for it to be worth anything: you have to find out that the routing moved while the box is still at sea. That is the part a tracking platform is for, and it is why importers pair one with the carrier’s monitoring rather than choosing between them.

Can I change my reefer’s temperature myself while it is at sea?
Not directly. You raise it with the carrier, they decide, and their system sends the instruction to the container. Expect it to take hours rather than minutes, and expect some requests to be refused.
Which carriers support it?
The major lines offer it on the part of their fleet that carries the hardware, usually as part of the same product as their monitoring. Whether your particular box is on it depends on which container you were allocated, so ask about the shipment rather than about the line.
Is a mid-voyage setpoint change risky?
It can be. Dropping the temperature on chilling-sensitive fruit causes damage that appears at destination and nowhere earlier. Make the change only where the reason is specific — a longer voyage, a wrong ventilation rate — rather than as a precaution.
